About the Competition - Details and Rules
The very first Harmony filter coffee brewing competition is here!
Join us at 5pm, Thursday 20th February at the Brew & Brownie Bakeshop in York as a spectator or as a competitor.
- Your entry ticket buys you 100g of coffee, which you should use to develop a recipe to perform on the day of the competition.
- Your recipe can use a MAXIMUM of 7.5g of coffee and a MINIMUM of 5g of coffee.
Yes, that's right. 7.5g of coffee is the MOST you can use for your recipe.
You may earn more points by using less coffee, but you must still serve 75g.
- Your recipe must serve at MINIMUM 75g of drinkable coffee.
This is judged as the weight of coffee inside the competitor's jug once time is up. If the jug contains less than 75g of coffee, you'll be docked 1 point for every gram missing.
- You do not need to save any coffee to brew on the day, we will provide this for you.
The coffee supplied on the day will be from the EXACT SAME batch.
Keep this in mind when preparing your competition recipe.
- You can use ANY commercially available manual brewer that you wish to produce filter coffee. You can bring your own, or we have two Hario Switches available for use.
- You can bring your own water. If you don't bring your own, we will provide it.
Adding minerals to the water pre-brew is allowed, but you may NOT flavour the water. If you intend to add minerals to your water - seek clarification by filling out our contact form.
- Post-brew Mineral concentrates (Like Apax Lab, etc.) will not be allowed for this competition. This is something we may look at in the future, but not this time.
- You can bring your own kettle. If you need one provided, we can provide one.
- This competition will be a scored competition.
The competitors will go up in pairs to brew and present their coffees. They will be given a jug labelled: A or B
The judges will judge the cups blindly, not knowing which competitor provided jug A or B. They will score each cup against a number of criteria and a final score will be awarded. This will not be revealed until the end.
Once all of the competitors have competed, three competitors will be asked to brew again to compete for victory - The top-2 scoring competitors and one wildcard (selected at random).
PLEASE CONSULT THE SCORESHEET ahead of your preparation.
- You will be given 15g of unsorted coffee to start the round.
The timer will start when both competitors are ready.
You have 10 minutes to complete the following:
- Set up your Kettle and Grinder
- Heat your Kettle
- Sort Beans (if you want to)
- Grind your Coffee
- Brew your Coffee
- Pack Down
- Serve your Coffee
At the end of 10 minutes, time will be called.
You'll be asked to step away from the tables and your coffee will be served to the judges, whether you have finished brewing or not.
Your station will be evaluated after for cleanliness.
- You can serve your coffee at any time during the 10 minutes, but it must be served before 10 minutes is up. The judges will begin evaluating immediately once the coffee has been submitted.
- We aim to begin the briefing at 5pm, so please be ON TIME.
- PLEASE CONSULT THE SCORESHEET (Use the photo carousel to locate this) ahead of your preparation. This is what you will be evaluated on.
- Remember, this is a competition, but it's meant to be fun!
Please be respectful to your fellow competitors and play fair.
Honest mistakes can happen, but any obvious and blatant attempts to cheat / break the rules will result in a DQ - which we really do not want to do.
THE FINALS - The Time Gambit.
Just in case a 10 minute time limit wasn't intense enough, the three finalists will be asked to write down a time bid, detailing the amount of time they would be willing to start the round with in exchange for a 5-point head-start over their competitors.
The person who bids the lowest amount of time will accept the time gambit, and take on their competitors with a reduced amount of time on their clock. The other competitors will start with the full 10 minutes.
I.e.
Competitor A bids 9:30
Competitor B bids 9:00
Competitor C bids 8:59
Both competitor A and B would start with the full 10 minutes
Competitor C would start with 8:59 remaining, but have +5 points to start the round.
Remember all competitors still need to:
- Set up their kettle and grinder
- Heat their kettle
- Sort their beans
- Grind their coffee
- Brew their coffee
- Pack down
- Serve their coffee
The standard scoresheet is still in play.
Will the gamble pay off for the competitor who takes on the gambit?
